LinkedIn

On Wednesday, July 12th, my Social Media Strategies class had a guest speaker come to discuss LinkedIn and its uses with us. Geralyn Mitchell discussed building an effective and professional LinkedIn profile, as well as how to find good professional connections that will aid users of the website or app in potentially obtaining the career of their choice.

For those who do not know, LinkedIn is a social networking website and application that is used to display users' resume information in one streamlined way. Users can list their previous jobs and professional experiences, including volunteer, portfolio, and internship work. Users can also connect to others within career fields or organizations they are interested in working for. On the other side of that coin, organizations and employers can also connect with prospective employees through LinkedIn.

Geralyn was incredibly helpful in showing the class what kind of content to display on a LinkedIn profile and giving us some insider tips on what makes individuals stand out with their profiles. She tutored the class on how to add content such as a personal biography, resume info, and profile pictures. She also taught us how to connect with other users within our career fields that might be useful to know when job searching, and stressed the importance of making good connections in order to further ourselves professionally.

With all the information provided by Geralyn, I am honestly going to continue using LinkedIn in my professional life after this class and after graduation. I believe it will be an asset for obtaining the job I want. I am going to continue to update it, following an internship I am taking in the Spring 2018 semester and my work for the band, A Fleeting Farewell, this Summer 2017 session. The site is really a great way to put myself and my work out there for potential clients and employers.
